Most branding projects get reduced to the end result as a nice case study that shows off the new  logo, shiny colour palette and endless set of guidelines (and we love every single one of them).

What you don’t see is the thinking that holds it all together. Without that, the work might look right, but it won’t last. A strong brand goes beyond surface decisions, utilising an understanding of what needs to be said and how it should show up. It sounds a little stuffy, but we promise it’s true!

Here’s a lowdown on how a brand is built.

Starting with what’s true

The work should always begin by getting close to the business. In order to really create a brand that represents them, you need to get to the nitty gritty of what it stands for and where it’s trying to go, but also the more difficult stuff like what’s getting in the way. Alongside that sits the audience, who are a VERY important part of crafting your brand. By subtly thinking about what they’re thinking and who they’re choosing between, your inclusion of them in your brand gives them something to recognise, and something to choose with confidence. It’s that combination of the two that gives you something solid to build from, rather than assumptions dressed up as strategy.

Giving the brand a clear stance

Once that ground is covered, the focus shifts to defining how the brand positions itself. Not just what it does, but how it wants to be seen and remembered. Personality and purpose come into play here, shaping a voice and point of view that feels deliberate rather than interchangeable.

Turning thinking into something you can see

Naturally, this is a big part of our brand craft, but strategy only works if it carries through into the creative. Why bother do all that digging just to ignore it at the most important point? This is where it starts to take shape visually, with systems that hold together across every touchpoint. This way, you’re making sure the thinking shows up consistently, wherever the brand appears.

Working it through, properly

The best results come from collaboration that’s open and honest. Hate that slogan? Not a fan of hard hats in your stock photo? That’s all good. In fact, this is where ideas are tested, challenged and refined, with both sides pushing towards something stronger. That process is where your idea of what your brand should appear as start to sharpen and where decisions start to stick.

Why it pays off over time

When the foundations are right, everything else really does become easier. Campaigns feel more joined up and the messaging lands faster. At the same time, the brand builds recognition without having to fight for it. It’s the difference between constantly reinventing and having something that holds.  It’s safe to say that building a brand is more than a 30-minute workshop and a PDF that no one looks at. It’s a powerful tool to set you apart in your industry, and it’s made up of a gazillion decisions that shape how you show up every day. Get those decisions right, and the rest of the work has something solid to stand on.
